Overlooked dissemination risks of antimicrobial resistance through green tide proliferation

Green tides caused by Enteromorpha, a type of algae, pose environmental challenges and may influence the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes. A study in the South Yellow Sea found that Enteromorpha phycosphere had higher ARG abundance but lower diversity compared to seawater. The phycosphere released high-risk ARGs, posing health and ecological AMR risks in marine environments, highlighting the need for a reassessment of AMR burden from a public health perspective.
